We always keep an eye on the weather in the days leading up to your session so there are no surprises the day of. and make sure you have the best environment possible.
Let’s chat all things family photo session locations on Block Island. We’ve given the down and dirty on where to have amazing beach ceremonies, and those are all perfect options for your family session — so we aren’t going to talk too much about beach locations this time. As local photographers on Block Island, we know all the best kid-friendly locations for your family session.
We know that not everyone can easily walk on sand or through the woods. These are some of our favorites places to take family pictures that aren’t hard to get to.
Hang out with the animals during your family session! This is one of our favorite in-town location for kiddos who hate taking pictures. Kids of all ages (that means you too!) can climb on their giant copper tortoise. It’s also a great way to get some fun shots. If we’re lucky we’ll be able to meet the camels and kangaroos quite intimately.
We’ve talked about the Spring House Hotel before, but let’s recap. Sweeping lawns, gorgeous gardens, and amazing ocean views wait for you at this classic New England destination. We love taking photos at this hotel for so many reasons, but the best is its’ accessibility. The even grounds and paths make the Spring House a great family photo location for people of all ages.
This is a great place to just hop out of the car for a small session. The Enchanted Forest is perfect for windy days or when it’s a bit chillier. A great spot for littles with lots of energy, this nature walk is protected from the road. We love taking family pictures of larger or young families in this location.
The beach behind the Block Island Beach House is one of our most popular spots for family photo sessions. Right in town, this is a great place for fitting in a quick early morning or late afternoon photo shoot. There’s also a hill at the back of the property, with a path going up to the parking lot. All three locations make for iconic Block Island family photos.
There is so much more to this beautiful New England island than beaches. Meadows and easy walking paths wait for you towards the center of Block Island.
Full of rolling meadows and gorgeous views, Hodge Preserve is a great spot for family pictures. Just of off Corn Neck Road, it’s also a good place to take a break during bike rides. Take a leisurely walk to the south end of Sachem Pond to try and see some wildlife. With sweeping views of the North Light and conservancy lands, it’s also a beautiful spot for sunset photos.
If you’re game to get out in nature, so are we! Greenway Trails is full of awesome places to take your family photos. We love the 28 miles of easy winding paths and gorgeous views of the Atlantic Ocean. Hike down to the beach at Painted Rock or Black Rock, just a short walk from the Enchanted Forest!
More for the adventurous family, Clayhead Trail is a great spot for an extended family session. Also located on Corn Neck Road, this super cool place has a little bit of everything. We’ll wander through the “maze” of trails, pausing to enjoy some of the greenery. We also love to visit the daffodil fields in spring.
Just off the Greenway Trail, Fresh Pond is one of our favorite spots to take pictures with tons of greenery! Located in a more central part of Block Island, it’s also a great place for families who want to escape tourists. Fresh Pond is also a perfect place to beat the heat since it’s usually cooler than the beach!
See what we did there? As photographers, we love the beach, and Block Island is literally surrounded by them. Here are a few of our favorites for family pictures or maternity sessions.
An iconic location for family photos, it’s been a challenge to come here the past few years. Despite the odds, we love the beautiful Southeast Lighthouse. With lots of construction and tourists, it can be a little tough to get clean shots on the lawn. It takes a little maneuvering and solid timing, but it is possible to get those classic, timeless images.
If you head out to the North Light, you’ll find tons of open spaces for your family photos. Easy paths through the dunes lead to gorgeous beaches. Set up a picnic or play football for your family session. This spot is great for a midweek session, since it tends to get busy on the weekends. We also love the North Light for sunrise or sunset pictures.
Instead of heading to Mohegan Bluffs, which is often super crowded during the summer months, check out Black Rock. We’re big fans of Black Rock and the beach at Painted Rock. Both are a little more secluded, and offer very similar views. These spots are two of our favorites and pretty easy to get to.
If you’re more of the boating type let’s take photos in the marina! Why not, right? We can use the marina to capture some family memories, then head down to the beach. The rock walls that line the property are great for some more iconic family photos. As Block Island photographers, we’re always looking for something that really matches a family, and for boaters this is it!
