Block Island: The Sullivan House

Closed in the winter months, the Sullivan House is the perfect Block Island wedding venue overlooking the ocean, and nature trails. Designed by Blacknight Studios, the property features a couple of preserved Victorian buildings and a large tent with panoramic ocean views. Located in Southern Rhode Island, the wedding venue is one of the largest on Block Island.

The 46-acre property on a peninsula is situated between the Great Salt Pond and the Fred Benson Town Beach. As a result, no matter where you are on property you’ll have panoramic ocean views. One of the oldest wedding venues on Block Island, folks have been getting married at the Sullivan House for decades.

On the property, you’ll find a couple of historic victorian homes, the main one featuring a wrap-around covered porch that’s perfect for an intimate or micro wedding. Most weddings opt for an ocean-side ceremony, with cocktail hour closer to the main structure, and then the remainder of the reception in the tent.

Planning a Block Island Wedding

No matter how you go about it, there are a few critical things for anyone planning a Block Island wedding. Three of the hardest vendors to book on Block Island are DJs, hair and makeup artists, and officiants. Let’s chat about how to make this a little easier:

Booking a DJ on Block Island:

A few DJs regularly hit Block Island that we love working with and navigate challenges with ease. John O’Neill is probably the busiest DJ on the island — you can find him at https://islandweddingdj.com/

I’d book John as soon as you book your venue. If you’re looking for something different or someone different a few things you should note: you should always have your DJ come at least the day before and they’ll likely stay the day after (2-night hotel stay minimum).

They will need help getting their equipment from the ferry to any venue — you could have them snag a taxi, but they have a LOT of gear. I would also connect them in an email with the venue at least two months before the wedding so that folks can figure out some of the challenges with historic venues.

Booking a Block Island Hair and Makeup Artist:

There are two stops for hair and makeup on Block Island: Koru Spa and Salt. Definitely try to book your trials to coincide with venue walk-throughs and an engagement session on the island. I’d get in touch with both fast and book them similarly, as soon as you book your venue.

Booking a Block Island Officiant:

Going through the town hall is a must when getting married on Block Island. You have to make an appointment ahead of time to fill out your marriage license.

The Town Hall also has a list of officiants. Reach out to them as soon as your venue is booked as well. Remember that your license must be dropped off to Town Hall within 72 hours of your wedding day.
